HISTORY
In January of 2013 several men from Meade County attended the annual Catholic Men’s Conference in Owensboro. Matt Carrico, one of the organizers of the conference gave a short presentation on the unique opportunity available through the FCC, allowing for the issuance of licenses for low power FM radio stations for non-profit organizations. Matt indicated that the process was not that complicated and that there was a good support group, including his station in Owensboro, 107.9 FM, to assist in the application process and have even assisted financially.
The first major step was finding a non-profit community service organization to sponsor the license. The local Knight of Columbus, operating under the Santa Maria Corporation, was approached and they embraced the idea of having a Catholic Radio station in Meade County. With that support the process began and eleven months later a construction permit was granted on Feb 11, 2014.
With the construction permit in hand, the organizers approached our local Pastors, Fr. Robert Abel of St. Mary Magdalen in Payneville and St. Theresa in Rhodelia and Fr. Kevin Bryan, pastor of St. John’s in Brandenburg and St. Martin’s in Flaherty about the opportunity of Catholic Radio in Meade County and requested their permission to proceed. They were intrigued with the opportunity and immediately a letter was drafted to the Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Archbishop of Louisville asking for his permission and blessing on the project; which he saw as an exciting and wonderful opportunity for the evangelization of our faith.
Soon thereafter a committee was formed to begin the construction phase. The first officers and technicians of our newly formed committee are: Rodney Pickering, president, Mickey Chism, vice president, Shirley Beavin, secretary-treasurer, David Cooper, program director, Charlie Wilkins Jr., engineer. Other members of the committee with significant roles are Mickey Chism, Roselle Muse, Hurschel Hardesty, Nancy Tate, Ed Tate, Ron Foushee and Jim Thissen. Fr. Robert Abel and Fr. Kevin Bryan serving as spiritual consultants. Deacon Greg Beavin and Deacon Mike Jones are also assisting in the organization and construction.
Another very important and key player in this venture is WMMG RADIO 93.5 F.M. and its owner Chris McGehee. Chris has agreed to lease our station at a very reasonable price tower space for the mounting of our antenna. Their co-operation has enabled our construction phase to move along at a much faster pace.
May God Bless all those working to spread his word.
